Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals" (1920, C.E.A. Winslow). It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents. The dimensions of health can encompass "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" as defined by the World Health Organization.

Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental, community, behavioral, and occupational health are other important subfields.

The focus of Stempel Public Health Association is to improve health and quality of life by using methods of prevention and awareness that are geared towards Florida International University students, faculty, and staff as well as other communities.

"Because Public Health means Your Health"

Attaining a membership with SPHA is free of charge and there is currently no "active membership" point system. However, there are t-shirts provided that may be bought and money is placed into our fundraising account for any planned events.
The only "point system" we are currently active in is for the organization as a whole. If you (and your guests) attend an SPHA meeting or event, please take pictures and forward the pictures to The more pictures of SPHA members participating, the more points we accumulate and funding we may receive from FIU/CSO. Again, participation in any events are voluntary but highly recommended.
Participation in events is a great way to expand your network, increase your knowledge in public health, and gain new friendships.
