RISD LEADS - Leading Reform: Creating Change within the System
Featuring Elizabeth Roberts, Former Lieutenant Governor and Current Secretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (Biography)
When we think of activism, we tend to envision a process of campaigning for social change that begins outside of formalized systems of government. Yet major reform can happen in any arena, including those with a reputation for being slow to change. This session will explore how leaders can incorporate an activist mindset to spark reform from within the system. Drawing insight from real-life examples in Rhode Island state government, healthcare reform and the presidential election campaign, we will discuss how to recognize the need for change, choose strategies, build partnerships and allies, and overcome obstacles along the way. We will also explore how artists and designers can use their unique skills in fundamentally different ways to reach new audiences and effect change in new domains.
