MSD End of the Year Celebration Nominations 2017-2018

The Office of Multicultural Student Development [MSD] seeks to recognize the students, faculty, staff, clubs, and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Appalachian State community during the 2017-2018 academic year during our annual awards ceremony on April 23rd 7-9pm in Parkway Ballroom. Please RSVP by April 9th by emailing Jenny Carlos at carlosjj@appstate.edu. Nominations are due by April 9th. 

Description of Awards

Organization of the Year:  This award recognizes a registered multicultural club or organization that has demonstrated excellence in embodying the guiding principles of the Office of Multicultural Student Development: social justice, collaboration, community, learning, intercultural competence, leadership, support, sustainability, and personal well-being during the 2017-2018 academic year. The multicultural club or organization must also have made a meaningful contribution and positive impact on both the Appalachian State student experience and the greater campus community during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Most Improved Organization of the Year: This award recognizes significant improvement in the programming, membership development, and leadership of a registered multicultural club or organization during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Best New Student Club or Organization of the Year: This award recognizes a club or organization that was created or organized during the 2017-2018 academic year. The new club or organization must be registered and recognized by The Office of Multicultural Student Development and the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership. The multicultural club or organization must also have made a meaningful contribution and positive impact on both the Appalachian State student experience and the greater campus community during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Program of the Year: This award recognizes the best and most effective program or event hosted by a multicultural student club or organization during the 2017-2018 academic year. Programs or events must have had a central focus on social justice or intercultural competence and were free and open to the public.

Outstanding Community Service: This award recognizes a multicultural club or organization that has demonstrated a proven commitment to community service during the 2017-2018 academic year. Examples of community service include: serving meals at a soup kitchen or shelter, volunteering at an after school program, etc.

Organizational Impact Award: This award recognizes a multicultural club or organization that has made significant efforts to further social justice initiatives on campus and within the Boone community. MSD defines social justice as: “To challenge the roots of oppression, inequity and injustice; empower all people to exercise self-determination and realize their full potential.”

Executive Member of the Year: This award recognizes a multicultural club or organization executive member (i.e., President, Vice President, Treasurer, etc.) who has been instrumental in the success and development of their respective organization during the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Everette B. Nichols Award for Student Leadership: This award was created in honor of Everette Nichols, an Appalachian State alumnus and former Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Engagement. The recipient must be an active undergraduate student member of multicultural clubs and organizations and must exemplify the guiding principles of The Office of Multicultural Student Development: social justice, collaboration, community, learning, intercultural competence, leadership, support, sustainability, and personal well-being. 

Individual Impact Award: This award recognizes a member of a multicultural club or organization that has made significant efforts to further social justice initiatives on campus and within the Boone community. MSD defines social justice as: “To challenge the roots of oppression, inequity and injustice; empower all people to exercise self-determination and realize their full potential.”

Outstanding Advisor: This award recognizes an exceptional faculty/staff advisor for a registered multicultural student club or organization for their positive contributions to student learning and development. The nominee should be currently employed by Appalachian State University, listed on AppSync as the club advisor, and have played an active, involved role in the club or organization during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Outstanding (MCC, LGBT, Women's Center) Volunteer: These award is available only to volunteers in the LGBT Center, the Multicultural Center, and the Women’s Center. The Office of Multicultural Student Development depends largely on the involvement and dedication of student volunteers in its three centers to further its mission of creating a more inclusive, affirming, and action-oriented campus. Nominees should have been a volunteer in their Center for at least one semester and have gone above and beyond the responsibilities of a desk shift volunteer.

Outstanding Faculty or Staff: This award recognizes the contribution of a faculty or staff member that is currently employed at Appalachian State University for their support in helping further the mission of MSD by positively impacting students at AppState.
