Criterion Application 2019-2020

If you would like to be considered for any position for The Criterion, please fill out the form below. Please keep in mind, one criteria is to be available all day on Sundays for production. 

The EDITOR IN CHIEF shall operate within these duties and restrictions:(FILLED FOR SPRING 2020)

  1. He/She shall chair all general, special, and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall hire section editors, designers, photographers and other staff as needed.
  3. He/She may call special or executive meetings if necessary.
  4. He/She may oversee decision making and will be responsible for final decisions made in case of any ties.
  5. He/She shall oversee the preparation and training of all section editors.
  6. He/She shall meet with ASG and FAC during the biennial budget process and will be responsible for preparing and presenting future budgets.
  7. He/She shall attend and partake in all Criterion events and promotions.
  8. Major decision making such as the passing of amendments or controversial story ideas are limited to agreement by majority consensus; done to avoid a dictatorship.
  9. He/She shall be responsible for the final product of the newspaper.
  10. He/She will monitor and evaluate staff in order to make sure all employees are doing their jobs correctly.
  11. He/She shall serve as the office manager being responsible for phone messages, mail, computer and office supplies (may ask Managing Editor to share this responsibility.
  12. He/She shall serve as the liaison for the website.

The MANAGING EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall be a liaison between the Editor in Chief and other staff and other student oriented, campus based organizations.
  2. He/She shall attend all meetings.
  3. He/She shall help the Editor in Chief in any manner asked upon by the Editor in Chief.
  4. He/She shall oversee processing of grievances and suggestions made about the paper or staff members.
  5. He/She shall maintain a current contact list for all members of staff as well as important sources on campus and within the community.
  6. He/She shall serve as a liaison between the Business Manager and the Editor in Chief, and assist the Business Manager with the management of the ad representatives.
  7. He/She shall edit and review all content before the Editor in Chief.

The NEWS EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall actively recruit writers and reporters and photographers.
  3. He/She shall actively seek out story and other assignments.
  4. He/She shall actively promote and participate in Criterion promotional activities.
  5. He/She shall be at every production night/day and edit all material in the section.
  6. He/She shall ensure factual and unbiased content.
  7. He/She shall be the liaison between the college communication director and the staff of the Criterion.

The FEATURES EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall actively recruit writers and reporters and photographers.
  3. He/She shall actively seek out story and other assignments.
  4. He/She shall actively promote and participate in Criterion promotional activities.
  5. He/She shall be at every production night/day and edit all material in the section.
  6. He/She shall make content is diverse and on contemporary.

The OPINION EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall actively recruit writers and reporters and photographers.
  3. He/She shall actively seek out story and other assignments.
  4. He/She shall actively promote and participate in Criterion promotional activities.
  5. He/She shall be at every production night/day and edit all material in the section.
  6. He/She shall seek a diverse array of opinions.

The SPORTS EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall actively recruit writers and reporters and photographers.
  3. He/She shall actively seek out story and other assignments.
  4. He/She shall actively promote and participate in Criterion promotional activities.
  5. He/She shall be at every production night/day and edit all material in the section.
  6. He/She shall try to cover all the sports, not just varsity sports.
  7. He/She shall try to maintain a good working relationship with coaches.

The PHOTO EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall oversee all photos that are turned in and ensure the photos in the correct format.
  3. He/She shall ensure a wide variety of photos that maintain ethical boundaries and newspaper standards.
  4. He/She shall available on Production Night for questions and assistance.

The BUSINESS MANAGER shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall manage the books, budgets and money transfers involving any monetary funds at the Crite.
  2. He/She shall supply weekly updates about the budget and funding.
  3. He/She shall create run sheets and organize the advertisements sold and in which issue they will appear.
  4. He/She shall maintain contact with all advertisers and Alloy, emails should be copied to the Editor in Chief.
  5. He/She shall check the phone mail, mail, and email three times weekly.
  6. He/She shall send out proofs of publication.
  7. He/She shall manage the advertising representatives.
  8. He/She shall communicate openly with the Editor in Chief and the Managing Editor when it comes to making executive decisions involving money.
  9. He/She shall sell ads.

The WEB DIRECTOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall oversee everything involved in the Crite online
  3. He/She shall manage the Criterion Facebook page, Twitter account, website, and other forms of social media
  4. He/She shall communicate with each section editor during production
  5. He/She shall make sure all content is transferred and available online
  6. He/She shall communicate regularly with the EIC and Managing Editor
  7. He/She shall manage the Crite’s online reputation and promotion through social media

The DISTRIBUTION MANAGER shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all Criterion staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall be responsible for picking up all copies of the printed newspaper from the Sentinel on Monday evenings.
  3. He/She shall bring the paper to each editorial/staff meeting.
  4. He/She shall distribute the Crite on Tuesdays throughout campus and the surrounding communities, including every dorm and academic building on campus.
  5. He/She shall distribute the Crite to restaurants and retail stores throughout Grand Junction that allow our paper to be distributed there.
  6. He/She shall continually seek places to expand distribution of the newspaper

The COPY EDITOR shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. He/She shall attend all staff and Editorial Staff meetings.
  2. He/She shall assist in the production of the newspaper.
  3. He/She shall edit every section and page for spelling/grammar errors, punctuation, headlines, page numbers, and design.

ALL OTHER STAFF shall operate within these duties and restrictions:

  1. Shall attend all general meetings.
  2. Shall help out with any extra promotional events the Crite participates in.
  3. Shall follow the instruction and direction of their supervising section editor.
  4. Shall operate within the ethical standards set forth in the AP stylebook and the SPJ websites code of ethics.
  5. The shall maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
