February Student Organization of the Month - PsychSIGN
Feb 10, 2016 by Skye McLeod
The February Student Organization of the Month award goes to PsychSIGN!
During the 2015-2016 school year, the USA chapter of PsychSIGN hosted three events that positively impacted the local community. PsychSIGN has used their meetings to provide learning opportunities to group members by bringing in speakers who offer first hand insight of mental illness. At one meeting, a woman with Major Depressive Disorder spoke with the medical students about her experience navigating the health care system with a mental illness, giving the members helpful insight into their future career endeavors. PsychSIGN believes that applying classroom initiatives with real world approaches will assist them as future health care providers by learning about their roles and impact through the eyes of a patient.
In 2015, the USA chapter of PsychSIGN was chosen to receive the honored Helping Hands Grant for the second time through the American Psychiatric Association. These funds were used to organize a mental health outreach event at the Mobile Flea Market in which visitors were offered free blood pressure screenings, substance abuse screenings, and depression screenings while receiving valuable mental health literature. The organization members and student volunteers were able to interact with the community as they administered the screening tests, enabling them to gain helpful hands on experience.
In addition to their community outreach, PsychSIGN is currently hosting a toiletry drive that will run until March. All donations will be presented to the PAWS Student Run Free Clinic whom volunteer their medical and pharmaceutical services at the “15 Place Homeless Shelter” in Mobile. Collection boxes can be found in the Medical Sciences Building.
