Transcend Auraria: A Social Justice Retreat

Oct 18, 2016 by Nelson Rodriguez

You are cordially invited to apply as a participant for the Transcend Auraria Social Justice Retreat, to be held from January 20th-22nd, 2017 at Ponderosa Center in Larkspur, CO. This retreat is being held in collaboration with all three institutions on the Auraria Campus: Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and University of Colorado Denver.

Deepen your understanding of Social Justice by attending the inaugural Transcend Auraria Social Justice Retreat, a tri-institutional, off campus, overnight experience for Auraria Students. The purpose of this retreat for the Auraria campus is to create a safe space for students of all backgrounds to deepen their exploration and understanding of issues related to diversity, inclusion, identity, power, privilege and oppression. Given the context of several national, regional, and local events that have impacted our campus community, this retreat will provide a space for students to engage in conversations across difference in a deep and intentional way.

This three-day, two-night off campus retreat, will be grounded in social justice pedagogy. Students will be challenged to understand their lived experience as the grounds for developing critical perspectives and actions directed toward social change (Adams, 2007). The hope is that through this retreat, students will begin to understand how dynamics of power, privilege and oppression show up in their lives and on campus, ultimately resulting in a positive influence towards the Auraria campus climate.

Student applications are due by 11:59pm on Sunday, October 30, 2016.
