Black Heritage Month Student Committee Application 2019

The mission of Black Heritage Month is to educate both the USF and Tampa Bay community on the importance of the history and significance of the Black culture. Black Heritage Month provides an educational atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and alumni to celebrate and commemorate the contributions that the black community has made to society. Our theme for the month long celebration is 

"Sankofa: Incorporating our Past into the Present to Make Progress for the Future."
 
Black Heritage Month takes place annually in February.

The Black Heritage Month Committee will be comprised of a group of USF students coordinated by the USF Office of Multicultural Affairs. This committee will be responsible for the planning and implementation of signature events, marketing and promotion, and the selection of programs that adhere to the mission of Black Heritage Month.

The committee structure: 

General BHM Committee Responsibilities 

  • General responsibilities all of BHM Student Leaders
  • Communicate, Delegate, Support
  • Attendee all BHM Meetings
  • Aid in areas most needed

Committee Position Descriptions: 

Student Director
Primary responsibilities include:

  • Report to the Black Heritage Month Advisor
  • Be the student voice for the BHM committee
  • Oversee the progress of your Event Coordinators
  • Maintain Documented Weekly Contact with: Public Relations Director and Secretary
  • Check progress of all coordination with the student organization and department event submission process
  • Will oversee the implementation of the BHM Kick-Off which begins Black Heritage Month
  • Work with Public Relations Director for promotions for Kick-off and Sankofa Celebration
  • Create a “Day of Show” including layout and logistics of Sankofa Celebration
  • Create an opportunity for students to network with Black professionals by inviting key faculty members and university constituents to attend event
  • Create transition materials outlining your position including schedule, notes, and other important items 

Secretary
Primary responsibilities include:

  • Verify the creation of general meeting agendas before the BHM meetings
  • Read over meeting minutes and attendance records of BHM meetings
  • Read, understand, and verify that all notes from meeting minutes are completed before end date
  • Oversee the event submission process in conjunction with the Student Director
  • Help to formulate transition material in conjunction with the Student Director

Public Relations Director

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Report to Student Director
  • Meet with BHM Advisor
  • Ensure updates of all Social Media to promote Black Heritage Month on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
  • Research Black Heritage Facts to post daily on Facebook and Instagram during Black Heritage Month
  • Create logistics for physical advertisement for BHM for USF campus; they should advertise for BHM Office Sponsored Events
  • Take pictures at all BHM events and post to social media within 24 hours

Event Coordinators
Primary responsibilities include:

Kick-Off Coordinator

  • Report to Student Director
  • Meet with BHM Advisor
  • Coordinate the decorations, use theme, and look of the event
  • Create an effective way in which to deliver the concept of: Empowerment and success within the Black community
  • Create an opportunity for students to network with Black professionals by inviting key faculty members and university constituents to attend event
  • Coordinate with BHM Advisor and student director to send out invitation letters to key faculty, staff, and students of USF
  • Work with Public Relations Director for promotions for this event
  • Coordinate student organization participation/performances
  • Create a “Day of Show” including layout and logistics
  • Create  transition material outlining your position including schedule, notes, and other important items

Sankofa Celebration Lead Coordinator

  • This position will be done in coordination with BHM Advisor
  • Send out invitation letters to students of USF
  • Work with Public Relations Director for promotions for this event
  • Create a “Day of Show” including layout and logistics
  • Create an extensive transition binder outlining your position including schedule, notes, and other important items
  • Create an opportunity for students to network with Black professionals by inviting key faculty members and university constituents to attend event
