Difficult Discussions: Navigating the Treacherous Terrain of Race Relations in the 21st Century
Navigating the Treacherous Terrain of Race Relations in the 21st Century:
Strategies for Inclusive Pedagogies and Programs
Facilitated by: Kijua Sanders-McMurtry
As we work towards excellence in advising, mentoring, supporting and teaching students – we are consistently reminded of the treacherous terrain of race relations and how it impacts our daily efforts to help students matriculate at our institutions. In this interactive workshop, the facilitator explores key questions: What strategies can you employ to create an inclusive campus environment for students? Can we get past our anxieties to talk about racial issues with our students in meaningful ways that impact student success? What techniques are effective in mitigating the complex racial microaggressions that students experience in a college or university environment? What inclusive pedagogies and programs should faculty and staff implement in a 21st century environment. This will be an open dialogue with faculty and staff on cultivating inclusive practices within the campus community. This conversation will focus on creating a campus environment that supports a diverse student body and will include a discussion of contemporary issues.
