Get involved in INFORMS this semester!
Hi all! We've got a great semester coming up, with a lot of great activities and opportunities for you to connect with your fellow INFORMS members, interact with distinguished speakers, share your skills and knowledge and give back to the community. We can't wait to see you at all of our events!
This semester we have a number of important activities and will need volunteer leaders to help make them a success. Please read through all of our activities, think about how you can help out, and sign up to share your skills and talents with our community!
NEW! INFORMS Journal Club
Starting this semester, we'll be hosting a Journal Club every First Friday of the month. Our first meeting will be held on Friday, February 6th at 4pm in CUTR 202.
What is a Journal Club? Every month, we'll pick one scientific research article with broad and important impact in the IE/OR field to read and discuss together. At the meeting, one volunteer will lead the group in a critical, open discussion about the paper and it's merits and techniques. Through the discussion, students in the Journal Club will learn about new and important developments in IE and share knowledge and advice with their peers. Every meeting will end with a "Tech Tip" – a 15-minute tutorial on research-relevant skills.
For more information, head over to the INFORMS Journal Club page on BullSync. For a very quick introduction, check out this slide presentation on the Journal Club. And finally, I've set up a discussion board forum on BullSync for us to talk about paper suggestions, questions, ideas, etc.
The first paper to be presented on February 6th will be Do we need hundreds of classifiers to solve real world classification problems? and the Tech Tip will be Building Great Models Quickly with "caret" and R. We look forward to seeing you there!
Come to CUTR 202 on Friday, February 6th to find out what the Journal Club is all about.
Code & Data Boot Camp 2015
We're joining forces with the USF IIE chapter again this year to provide the Code & Data Boot Camp, with two full days of sessions on data analysis and coding, and we're going to need your help!
The Boot Camp will take place in around early April and will feature sessions led by our INFORMS graduate students. We will need 5 people to join the Boot Camp Task Force and as many people as are interested to lead the sessions throughout the day. If you're interested in taking a leadership role, please sign up using this form. It's a great opportunity to share your skills, practice teaching and presenting, and create materials that can increase your online presence.
Again, here's the form to get involved: http://goo.gl/forms/hwrrbYdeEW
Engineering EXPO 2015
Another great way to get involved is through the Engineering EXPO, held in the spring every year – this year it's February 13th and 14th. During the EXPO, high school, middle school and elementary students come to the College of Engineering to learn about all of the various fields of engineering.
All of the engineering departments participate with displays and exhibitions, and INFORMS will be hosting two of these: the Automation Lab and the Simulation Lab.
Walter Silva will be coordinating the EXPO this year, so expect an email from him soon. If you'd like to volunteer for a three-hour shift at either lab, please use this form to sign up.
Kimbler Lecture Series Lectures
We have two guest speakers this semester with the Del & Beth Kimbler Lecture Series. Look for more details to come from our lecture series coordinators!
- Friday, January 30th: Dr. Binil Starly, NC State. 11:00-12:15 in ENB 109
- Friday, February 13th: Dr. Diego Klabjan, Northwestern. 11:00-12:15 in CMC 147
We'll be hosting several social events this semester as well. We're looking to have a social gathering about midway through the semester. But more importantly, we'll be hosting our annual fundraiser: the 9th Annual International Potluck. The potluck is the chapter's only fundraising event, held each year at the end of the semester (details TBA), for which INFORMS members cook foods from their respective home countries to share with their fellow students and IMSE faculty. It is a great opportunity to share a bit of your culture with others and to interact with professors and students, fellow INFORMS members and others! Oh, and to taste some very excellent home cooking from other countries!
We held a general meeting last week (Jan 20th) to discuss all of these activities and to decide on next year's budget. If you missed the meeting, you can find the general meeting slides on BullSync.
By the way, there are a lot of great features available to the chapter on BullSync. If you haven't checked it out in a while, go take a look now. From BullSync, you can see all of the chapter's Events, recent News, Pictures from our events, and even a Discussion board where you can post questions and thoughts to your fellow INFORMS students about anything you want (IE-related, of course).
Thanks for being a part of the INFORMS Student Chapter at USF and our community of Industrial Engineers. We can't wait to see you at one of our events soon!
