Barbara Gastel, a physician specializing in writing and editing, is professor of integrative biosciences, medical humanities, and biotechnology at Texas A&M University, where she coordinates the graduate program in sci-ence communication.
Dr. Gastel earned a BA from Yale and an MD and MPH from Johns Hopkins. After a fellowship at Newsweek, she served at the National Institutes of Health. She then taught writing at MIT and Peking University Health Science Center.
Dr. Gastel is first author of How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper, 8th edition. She also has published three other books and many articles on writing and other topics, and she has edited the Council of Science Editors periodical, Science Editor.
Long interested in international communication, Dr. Gastel has overseen a program to teach writing and editing in China. She also has helped lead AuthorAID, a program to help researchers in developing countries write and publish.
