Match Report - Western Sydney v Macquarie University
Sep 11, 2017 by Brendan Hoey
Over the weekend Western Sydney University took on Macquarie University in an exhibition Rugby 7’s match as a curtain raiser for the NRC game between Greater Sydney Rams and the Sydney Rays.
Western Sydney scored early when some scrappy ball from a line out saw Pj Carwright dart down an unmanned blindside to score in the corner, Kieran Hayman was able to slot an impressive conversion from out wide to take a 7-0 lead.
From there some impressive defence from Western Sydney against a much larger Macquarie University side led to no further try’s in the first half.
Macquarie were quick to hit back with a try of their own after the break and a yellow card to Western Sydney saw them hit the lead with another two try’s in quick succession.
Special mention to Joshua Lynch who broke his leg right on full time making a try saving tackle, we wish him a speedy recovery!
It was a courageous effort by the Western Sydney team against a much bigger opponent especially seeing as many of the boys were meeting each other for the first time a few hours before kick-off. Many of these players will be going away later this month to represent Western Sydney at the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast. We wish them all the best for their upcoming competition! Go Western Sydney!
