Western Sydney University came in an incredible 2nd place for the ‘Spirit of the Games’ award at the Australian University Games.
The Australian University Games ran from September 26th- October 2nd and brought together 8,000 students from across 42 different universities throughout Australia to compete for the title of top performing university across a number of sports. The ‘Spirit of the Games’ award is given to the university who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship, comradery and team spirit throughout the duration of the games and is determined by competition, volunteers, tournament officials and university team managers.
Western Sydney University team captain, Ben Gentile said “We’re extremely proud to have received this award; it shows how Western Sydney University is a force to be reckoned with and how our team spirit is stronger than ever.”
According to Gentile, the annual ‘Tug-O-War’ challenge on Surfers Paradise beach was one of the pinnacle moments of team spirit for Western Sydney University, defeating Charles Sturt University. “The entire Western Sydney team turned up on Surfers Paradise beach to cheer on their team mates. We were by far the loudest and proudest and we made a huge statement to other universities. The fact it was also streamed live played a huge role in showing the community how strong our sense of team spirit is!”
