Western Sydney University dominates at Australian University Games!

The annual Australian University Games have concluded and Western Sydney University have finished in the top 20 universities overall. Throughout the seven days of competition, Western Sydney University claimed 16th place out of 42 universities from throughout Australia and secured 2nd place for the prestigious ‘Spirit of the Games’ award which recognises outstanding sportsmanship throughout the games.

This result far exceeded expectations as well as past results from the team at previous University Games. Western Sydney University Sports Officer, Brendan Hoey said that “we weren’t expecting results as great as this.  It’s a testament to the hard work and determination from our students and the incredible sportsmanship they demonstrated throughout the games”.

The Western Sydney University team took home a total of five Gold medals in Ten Pin Bowling, Men’s & Women’s Touch Football and two individual medals in Taekwondo that went to Cenk Sevinc and Keegan Davey.

A total of eight silver medals were won in Men’s Basketball, Men’s Futsal, Women’s Water polo, Women’s Soccer, the Men's 4 x 100m relay, Men's Medley Relay and Ben Jaworski in the Men's 100m sprint. Silver was also secured in swimming by Trent Abbott in the 200m Breaststroke. 

Seven Bronze medals were won by the Mixed Netball team, Men’s Tennis team, Taekwondo team by Hansel Rebello, Rishad Akbary and Arashk Vatandoust. As well, one in athletics by Amanda Barendregt in the 5km Race Walk and in swimming by Trent Abbott in the 100m Breaststroke.

Western Sydney University also took home the prestigious ‘Tug- O- War’ champions trophy after defeating Charles Sturt University in an intense 89 second battle.

At the conclusion of the University games, ten Western Sydney students were selected in the prestigious ‘Green and Gold’ squad recognising them to be the most valued players from throughout the competition in their chosen sports.
