Tommy is a member of the Leadership & Community Engagement [LACE] Fellowship, which is a 300 hour leadership program combining community service, critical reflection, and leadership training. The Fellowship is an opportunity for RISD students to learn more about the local Providence area and experience how their art & design training can be utilized for the betterment of their communities. Fellows also receive a $1,200 education stipend at the conclusion of the program.
Welcome to LACE, the Leadership and Community Engagement fellowship!! My name is Tommy Maing, I am on of 13 participants that will be writing in this blog to share all our experiences going through this program, and hopefully beyond this program.
To start off, I am a junior at the Rhode Island School of Design studying Apparel Design (aka: Fashion Design), and I am mostly interested in the art of Costume making and Costume Designing. I've always been interested in sewing and making clothing, and I've also been interested in sharing my own skills and creative talent with other artists and designers. So this semester, I will be working with the Olneyville Public Branch Library teaching a class called Fashion for All with Tommy, where all participants will learn the basics of how to sew, design and make a collections while also further expanding their own artistic and creative ideas and expressions.
I am really excited to start this journey with you all and have a fun time sharing and telling all my stories of fun and interesting things that come up while working with such a diverse and assorted personalities and countenance!
