International Community Engaged Learning Program - Peru

General Trip Information and Application Timeline
20 current WSU students and 10 WSU alumni (adjusted as needed) will be selected as participants for this trip.

Completed applications are due no later than midnight on February 17, 2014. Applicant interviews for this trip will be conducted on February 24th - February 28th. Participants will be notified of their selection on March 3rd.

Students selected to participate will need to confirm their involvement by paying the non-refundable trip deposit of $900 to the Information Desk in the Shepherd Union Building. The participant will need to bring the ticket that they receive from the Information Desk to the Center for Community Engaged Learning (SU room 327) by 5:00 pm on due date of each payment. Failure to pay the $900 fee and return the ticket to the CCEL by 5:00 pm on due date of each payment, will result in forfeiture of your place on the Peru trip.  

Payment dates are as follows: 

$900 Deposit - Wednesday, March 5th

$900 Payment - Friday, April 11th

Remaining Balance - Wednesday, May 7th

All selected participants are required to attend a series of five mandatory team meetings:

March 7th 3:00-5:00 - SU 320

March 24th 3:00-5:00 - SU 321

April 18th 3:00-5:00 - SU 321

May 9th 3:00-5:00 - SU 321

May 30th 3:00-5:00pm - SU 321

Please hold these times on your schedule. If you have a conflict with any of these meeting dates/times, please state so in your application. Those who miss any of the five meetings without prior consent will forfeit their place on the Peru trip.

During the mandatory meetings, we will cover everything from required immunizations, fundraising options and logistics to local culture, customs and food.

Participant Fee
The participant fee covers airfare, transportation, lodging, three meals each day, travel snacks, the service project materials, a t-shirt and admission to Machu Picchu. Additional personal spending money should be taken for souvenirs, meals on the road, other optional activities and incidentals.

Trip Destination – Chiclayo, Peru

Service Projects

We will complete five main projects. 

The first will be cleaning, repairing and installing new playground equipment in an impoverished neighborhood. 

Our second project will be adding to a continued project of our partnering University, Juan Mejia Baca University, to construct a storefront to help teach women business skills that will assist them in creating their own personal businesses. 

Our third project will be laying a cement floor for a community day care facility.

Forth, we will be installing a potable water line for a community that currently has their water brought in by truck twice per week.

Finally, we will be installing an English library at an elementary school and painting their courtyard with a mural.  There will be opportunities to visit classrooms to teach the children and observe teachers.

We will be staying at host sites in close proximity to our partnering University, Juan Mejia Baca University.  The host sites will accommodate us well and will provide sufficient space for team-building exercises, reflections, planning and other activities.

Selected trip participants will have some free time.  We have planned to visit a few local museums and historical sites.  We will be visiting Machu Picchu on our way home for two days as well.  Additionally, there will be time in the evening hours to see the city and for buying souvenirs, etc. 

Upon acceptance, participants will be required to visit their doctor to complete a physical examination and medical clearance. We have included a few examples here of the type of questions that may be asked:

Have you had any chronic conditions requiring medical care?
Will you need any special medications or medical care while on this trip?
Are you allergic to any foods or medicines?
Do you have any other dietary restrictions?

We will discuss these components in further detail and take any questions at the mandatory team meetings.


All cancellations must be submitted in writing to the Center for Community Engaged Learning, 2113 University Cir, Ogden, UT 84408.  Cancellations may not be accepted over the phone or email.

The $900 deposit is nonrefundable.

The Center for community Engaged Learning expects accepted applicants to participate; our office personnel use program fees to arrange for the trip itinerary and travel costs. Cancellation refund amounts, therefore, shall be determined according to the following schedule:

March 3rd, 2014 to April 4th, 2014 – Full refund (minus $900 deposit)

March 5th or later – No refund will be given
