WesESL came out of a Justice for Janitors campaign in 2000 in which the custodial staff of Wesleyan won the right to 3 hours a week of English lessons to be given during their paid work shifts. Wesleyan students are paired with Wesleyan custodial workers, Middletown residents, and even students wishing to learn English as their second language. Students must commit to at least 3 hour sessions per week, attend monthly group meetings and one-on-one meetings.
