Welcome to ECU Pirate P.A.L.s previously known as ECU Reads/Counts!
ECU Pirates P.A.L.s make it a mission to serve children of Greenville by being tutors and mentors and reading buddies that educate, invest in, and inspire future generations of leaders. The vision of this program is to increase the academic skills and performance of elementary students within Pitt County and the surrounding area; ECU Pirate P.A.L.s seeks to recruit and prepare volunteers to serve as tutors, mentors and reading buddies to local grade school aged children. This program provides tutor/mentor/reading buddy training prior to placement and scheduling, and then ties local students to ECU student-tutors. Through community partnerships, we hope to address the educational issues and barriers faced by many impoverished communities; we seek to give the support and guidance that could make a difference in a child’s life.
This volunteer opportunity provides tutor training workshops, matches local students with tutors, and schedules tutoring times. This program focuses on expanding the academic skills students within the Eastern North Carolina region through mentorship. Through this partnership with fellow educators and community partners we hope to help address the issue of education and support youth in our community on their educational and personal journey. Preparation of volunteers and ongoing reflection are key components of the program.
