Learn to Prepare Taxes and Make a Difference at the same time!

How can you make a difference?

Dedicate 24 hours to VITA. Become a volunteer with the VITA Program and help low-to-moderate income families in need of free tax preparation assistance.

In Miami-Dade County alone, 80% of residents qualify for free tax assistance, and too often do not know it.  Last year alone, while only 1% of these residents accessed this free service, VITA helped them receive $4 million in tax credits and $11 million in refunds.  Just imagine the impact on our communities if more families were served!

Volunteer for VITA and say YES to making a difference in YOUR community today!

Nearly 92,000 people said “YES!” to making a difference during the 2013 filing season, preparing over 3.3 million returns at thousands of tax sites nationwide.

What is VITA?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.  IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

The VITA program in Miami-Dade is led by Branches, which along with its partners prepared over 6,000 free tax returns last tax season which secured over $7.6 million in refunds for our local community.

It’s people helping people. It's that simple.

Free Certification and Training

Volunteer training is offered at no cost, and will start in November.  Training will be offered online and in the classroom.  All study materials will be provided, and both weekday and weekend hours will be available.

Service Options

Not all VITA volunteers need to prepare taxes, and no previous experience is required. Volunteers receive specialized training and have the option of serving in a variety of roles.

Volunteers are expected to serve for at least 24-48 hours during the mid-January to mid-April season. Scheduling is flexible, and generally is on weeknights and/or weekend.

Can you dedicate 24 hours to VITA?

Please consider one of the following opportunities to serve your community during this important time of the year:

Greeter

Greeters are key to each VITA site.   They welcome and help orient clients to their site.  Greeters also help them complete intake forms and organize their documents prior to sitting down with a tax preparer.

Minimal training will include preparation to pass the IRS Ethics Level exam (“Volunteer Standards of Conduct”).

Translator

Multilingual services are desperately needed in Miami-Dade, particularly in Spanish, Creole, and Portuguese.  Translators will help facilitate the entire VITA process, from intake to final tax return review.

Minimal training will include preparation to pass the IRS Ethics Level exam (“Volunteer Standards of Conduct”).

IRS Certified Tax Preparer

Preparers receive the necessary training and support to become IRS-certified volunteers with the necessary skill, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax preparation for eligible taxpayers.

Training will include preparation to pass the IRS Ethics Level exam (“Volunteer Standards of Conduct”), and either the Basic-level or Advanced-level tax law exam.

Associate Site Coordinator

Associate Site Coordinators assist the Site Coordinator in providing overall leadership for the assigned site.  The Associate is available to assist with any issues that may arise.  The Associate also assists in developing and maintaining schedules for site volunteers to ensure adequate coverage, supplies, and equipment.

Training will include preparation to pass the IRS Ethics Level exam (“Volunteer Standards of Conduct”), and either the Basic-level or Advanced-level tax law exam.
