The MSU Big Event is a one-day service event for the MSU and Starkville community to roll up their sleeves and GIVE BACK. On March 30, the Maroon Volunteer Center will gather student leaders, faculty, staff, and community members to leave their mark on the local community.

How It Works
Volunteers and groups must pre-register before the event. Volunteer leaders and individual volunteers MUST check-in on Friday, March 29 from 2pm-6:30 pm at the Barnes & Noble patio to collect their t-shirt, volunteer packet, meal ticket, receive volunteer instructions and be officially checked in for the event. If you are an MSU student, faculty, or staff member, please do not forget your MSU ID. If you are not with MSU, bring any form of photo ID. On March 30, volunteer groups will head out to community service locations starting at 8 am. Most volunteer shifts will take about 2-2.5 hours to complete.

What is the Big Event?

The Big Event is the largest one-day service event at MSU. Students, faculty, and staff take 2 hours out of their day to volunteer in the local community.

When is the Big Event?

March 30, 2018, starting at 8:00 AM finishing up on or before noon.

When is the deadline to register?

The deadline to register is March 24th, 2019. If you attempt to register after that date, you will not get your volunteer assignment until you check-in for the event on Friday, March 29th. Also, we will not add any volunteers to teams if they register after March 24th.

Where do I register?

On OrgSync or at Community members without OrgSync access can register here.

Will transportation be offered?

Transportation will not be provided. However, if you do not have transportation, we will have a volunteer site for you that is either within walking distance or located on campus. Let us know you need transportation when you complete the registration form.

Can I volunteer at the same place as my friend?

Yes, but please register you and your friend as a group so we know you want to volunteer together. You must register before midnight on March 24th.

Does it cost to volunteer?

There is no cost to volunteer.

When do I need to check-in?

Volunteer check-in will be Friday, March 29 at the Barnes & Noble patio from 2:00 pm - 6:30 pm. At check-in, we will scan your ID card, provide you with a t-shirt, volunteer packet, meal ticket, and volunteer instructions. All volunteers must attend check-in. Check-in should be a quick process and only takes a few minutes.

What are times available to volunteer?

Most volunteer projects will start between 8am-10am and last about 2 hours. If you need to finish up by a certain time, please email us at

What if it rains?

You should probably bring a rain jacket.

Will I get a t-shirt?

A t-shirt, volunteer packet, and lunch will be provided free of charge.

Is this event open to anyone or do you have to be from MSU?

Anyone can volunteer. You don't have to be a student.

Is there a minimum age range?

No. However, if you are planning to bring children with you under the age of 16, please let us know on the registration form so that we can be sure to assign you to a service site that welcomes children.

What if I am participating in the Starkville Pride Parade or another event in the afternoon of March 30?

Please let us know on the registration form when you register so we can put you at a site that will finish on or before 10:00 am.

All, we have finished sending out site assignments for pre-registered students. If you have not recieved a site-assignment, just come see us at check-in tomorrow and we will get you a service site. ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST CHECK-IN FOR THE BIG EVENT on Friday (March 29) anytime between 12:00 pm-6:00 on the patio of the Barnes & Noble Bookstore. The check-in process should take only a few minutes to complete. At check-in we will be scanning ID cards (if you have one), handing out t-shirts, providing you with Saturday lunch tickets, and handing out important volunteer instructions. If you are unable to check-in due to a work, family, class commitment, or something similar, please make arrangements with us beforehand.
For volunteers that need help on Big Event Day ( will set-up a Big Event Help Station on the Barnes & Noble Patio from 7:15 am – 1:30 pm. We will also be providing a free lunch for volunteers from 10:30am-1:30 pm. Please bring the meal ticket provided to you at check-in.

Good evening volunteers,

Right now we hope that you have all your instructions for tomorrow! Here are some last minute reminders and tips to help you have a great BIG EVENT:

1.) Please make every effort to arrive at your service site on-time or even a few minutes early. If you have a community partner at your site, being late will make things difficult for them. Make sure you plan your route and know how long it will take to arrive at your service site before your shift starts.
2.) If you get lost or confused, please contact your site leader or your community partner first. If you cannot reach them, you can call us and we can try to help. The numbers to call BIG EVENT staff are 662-341-1706, 251-656-5074 and 662-648-9032. We will also have a volunteer command center set up on the patio of Barnes & Noble from 7:20am-1: 30 pm to help you. Lunch will be served between 11:00 am-1: 30 pm.
3.) Be patient. Not everything will go as planned. Some sites will end up with too many volunteers, while others may not have enough. It happens no matter how hard we try to get our numbers right. If there are too many volunteers at your site, try to be as helpful as possible. Volunteers can be difficult for a community partner to manage, especially if there are too many. Find a project, something that looks like you could help with (wash floors, sweep, clean bathrooms, pick up trash, reorganize cabinets, etc.) Suggest to your community partner other ways you can be helpful.
4.) Remember that volunteering is about serving others and giving back. Please try to keep a positive attitude throughout your service experience. If you are not thrilled with your site placement, know that someone thinks what your doing is important and they are grateful that you are taking the time to help.
5.) Lastly, please take photos and videos and SHARE them with us.
