Spring & Summer Opportunities for Community Engagement

Mar 29, 2017 by Lesley M Graybeal

Students, are you looking for an opportunity to serve this summer?

  • Our House in Little Rock has started recruitment for Summer VISTA positions with the Summer Youth Program. Positions include working with an age group of students or leading activities in a particular field (STEM, health, life skills, etc.), as well as the resale store, volunteer relations, operations, summer feeding program, and career center. Positions go from May 25th-August 4th and include a stipend of $455.70 every two weeks and an education award of $1200 at the end of service to be used towards federal loans or future educational expenses. If you are interested in the nonprofit/public service sector, email your resume and cover letter to Blake Tierney at vistaleader@ourhouseshelter.org and save the date for a Speed Interviews event on Saturday, April 8th from 9:00-11:30 at Our House in Little Rock.
  • UCA Cub Fit Camp is a day camp for rising 4th and 5th grade students with a dynamic lineup of activities related to fitness, nutrition, and wellness. Volunteers are needed to supervise a team of 4-5 youth throughout the week of July 17-21 for a morning or afternoon shift. Email volunteer@uca.edu or fill out the online application if you're interested!

How about an opportunity to become a more engaged citizen?

  • Join RESULTS Little Rock for a webinar training on how to write a letter to the editor to weigh in on legislative issues on March 29th at 7 pm. You can download Fuze (the webinar software) here: https://www.fuze.com/download. Here is a link to the meeting once you have Fuze downloaded: http://fuze.me/34642870
  • What do YOU think it means to be a good citizen? Say it with a zine (a small, self-published magazine)! UCA students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to a Zinemaking Workshop at the Faulkner County Library Monday, April 3rd from 4-5 pm. Then come see all the zines collected since Inauguration Day on display at the Campus Zinefest on Friday, April 14th at UCA Downtown from 3-6 pm. Refreshments will be served!

Don't forget to log your community service involvement on OrgSync for a chance to participate in the Bears Serve Challenge and be eligible for a community service graduation cord! Visit uca.edu/volunteer or email volunteer@uca.edu for more information or with your questions about community service opportunities.
