The Invisible Side of Hazing
Sep 20, 2017 by Shauna Irwin McNeil
The Today Show started their news week with a focus on Hazing given the recent death of the LSU student pledging a fraternity. While the nation talks about LSU and Penn State, many are surprised that we are still having to address hazing in spite of injuries, cases and student deaths over the years by fraternities, sororities, athletic groups, bands and other student groups. With that said, where do we fall on this spectrum and how can HBCU's be a part of the conversation?
How do we combat hazing when it seems to be invisible? How do you talk about the abuse but not go far enough to break the code of silence and secrecy? Will it take something serious to happen before we make every effort to eradicate this type of behavior and the tolerance for it.
