Welcome to the page for the University of Miami chapter of SPARK!

We are a small organization here on campus dedicated to serving our community by mentoring and inspiring 3rd to 5th grade girls. We mentor for once a week for an hour and a half inspiring our girls by exposing them to female leaders and skills we believe with help them be strong girls.

Our mission is to encourage young ladies to spark their way to brighter futures by promoting strength, perseverance, ambition, respect and kindness. These words make up the acronym SPARK, but most importantly are traits that should be within any strong girl, and woman. Outcomes for girls who participate in SPARK include:

  •   Increase in self-confidence and self-respect
  •   Positive self-image
  •   Fostering of positive relationships between girls
  •   Identification of positive role models
  •   The ability to make mindful decisions

The charter members of SPARK are former members of Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG), a national mentoring organization which no longer has a South Florida presence. Our experience with SWSG has allowed us to develop solid mentoring practices and age-appropriate curriculum material.

Organization Guidelines and Objectives

Guiding Principles

Our mission is to encourage young ladies to spark their way to brighter futures by promoting strength, perseverance, ambition, respect and kindness. These words make up the acronym SPARK, but most importantly are traits that should be within any strong girl, and woman. SPARK is tailoring its mentoring program to Miami-Dade County children who are often exposed to unrealistic and confusing messages of womanhood in the media. Young girls will be encouraged to challenge existing perceptions of beauty; they will contribute to an atmosphere of acceptance at school and at home.

Objectives

The objectives of SPARK shall be to:
• Provide leadership trainings each semester to improve mentoring skills
• Pair up mentors with at-risk and/or minority girls in the Miami community
• Meet weekly/bi-weekly with mentees to engage them in the SPARK curriculum
• Communicate the importance of the program with parents, at the discretion of the site
• Provide students with the opportunity to engage in meaningful volunteer service work in their community as volunteer mentors working with young girls in the Miami community
• Outcomes for girls who participate in SPARK include:
o Increase in self-confidence and self-respect, positive self-image
o Fostering of positive relationships between girls
o Identification of positive role models
o The ability to make mindful decisions
