Welcome to Community Action Center!

Did you know that over 30% of people in Whitman County, including WSU students, live in poverty? They may be a neighbor, colleague, or club member. They may be a victim of domestic violence, a senior citizen struggling to make their energy bill, or a family needing to eat a healthy meal.

Pullman’s Community Action Center (CAC) moves people and communities to a positive future throughout Whitman County!

Because people matter…

Kathy* came to CAC as a referral from Alternatives to Violence on the Palouse. As a victim of domestic violence, she and her two teenage sons were able to safely move forward with help from CAC staff. Kathy secured safe housing through the Tenant Based Rental Assistance program. This program provides rent and utility assistance along with extensive case management and resource development. Working with Amy, one of our staff, Kathy set goals for personal and financial development. Identifying her strength in accounting and finance, she was able to secure full-time employment at a bank.

Kathy transitioned to the Section 8 Rental Opportunity Program, which provided help with rent and utilities based on her income. This bit of help allowed her to pursue a degree in accounting. Upon graduation, she moved to a full-time position, with health benefits, at a tax preparation company. She is now completely self-sufficient.

Kathy now looks to the future of someday owning a home. CAC’s Affordable Housing program can help to make her dream come true.

Through diligence, hard work and help from Alternatives to Violence and Community Action Center, Kathy was able to move from being scared in a protective shelter to self-sufficiency and a realistic dream of owning her own home.

This is why we serve…
