The Hunger Banquet is held in February and works to create an awareness of what poverty is and how it affects our community. Students who attend hear from speakers who know about poverty in our local, statewide, or worldwide community, one of which typically has first-hand experience. They also have an experience of the statistical facts of poverty through what they are given to eat during the program that night. The majority of students are given rice, beans, and a tortilla and represent those who live in poverty. Some are given pizza and they represent those with a middle-income. A small percentage are given a three-course meal and they represent high-income individuals. With 100-300 students in attendance each year and the number growing, this program is effective and educational.
