Organization Overview

Judo translates into the "gentle way" and had its origins in jujitsu. It is a modern martial and combat sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Judo techniques are a scientifically designed into a balanced system to build both the mind and body. It is part of the Olympics, governed by a national body (USJF AND KONAN) and its most prominent feature is its competitive element. This is where the object is to either throw or takedown one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver (pin), or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold, or choke (that is immediately released when opponent taps out). For self defense, strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo practices, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori). WE WORK OUT BOTH ON (REC CENTER) AND OFF-CAMPUS (NEAR M59 AND CROOKS) AND HAVE FIVE BLACK BELT INSTRUCTORS TO HELP BOTH NOVICE AND SEASONED JUDOKAS. WE ARE COED AND WELCOME BOTH RECREATIONAL AND COMPETITIVE PLAYERS
