Organization Overview

About the company: Women for Women International works with socially excluded women in eight countries where war and conflict have devastated lives and communities. Each woman we serve has her own story–some of loved ones murdered, and others of physical and emotional trauma. Most have endured a struggle for survival. When we enroll women in our one-year program, they learn job skills and receive business training so they can earn a living. They come to understand their rights and how to fight for those rights in their homes, their communities and their nations and become leaders. Many women who graduate from our program assume leadership positions in their villages, actively participate in the reconstruction of their communities, build a civil society, start businesses, train other women, and serve as role models to other women and girls. Women for Women International believes that when women are well, sustain an income, are decision makers, and have strong social networks and safety-nets, they are in a much stronger position to advocate for their rights. Since its creation in 1993, Women for Women International has empowered over 250,000 women survivors of war to move toward economic self-sufficiency. They have distributed $79 million in direct aid, micro-credit loans, and other program services. Over 125,000 women and men in 105 countries worldwide have been inspired and mobilized to reach out and support women survivors of war - one woman at a time. About the Student Group at PSU: As a campus chapter of "Women for Women", we will host various fundraising events throughout the school year such as movie nights, international dinners, yogathons, theatre events, etc. that are fun as well as build awareness (and are hopefully motivating!) for students about the critical issues affecting women in conflict countries today. Our meetings, (which will be planned around everyone's schedule as best as possible) will consist of planning/organizing for an upcoming event, as well as discussing many various issues concerning women's advancement (the challenges as well as triumphs) as a whole throughout the world. With the money raised from fundraising, the group will have the opportunity to sponsor one or two women into the "Women for Women" program, which includes communicating with her and being updated on her progress. The group will begin in September, but needs more members, and perhaps a couple people who will be wiling to step in for myself, the vice president, and the outreach assistant when one of us is away or needs some extra help! Women are making a difference in their communities and are breaking the cycle of poverty, but they need our help. The aim of this group is get as many people involved and educated on the facts surrounding women worldwide, change women's lives through sponsorship, network within the Portland community, and have a fun, rewarding group environment with fellow students! Join us! Please let me know if you would like to become a member, or if you want more information, and I will be in touch with you! The CEO of "Women for Women" on the company:
