The Blue Ghost Firefly is a very rare type of firefly.  As far as I know they are only found in certain places in the southern Appalachians and are only seen during their approximately 1 month long mating season.  Their light is a starlight blue color and it burns for several seconds at a time. Departure time 8:30 from the South Chapel Lot. (travel time 1.5hours)

If you have a car, please be ready to drive so we can carpool!! And if you have an extra rope that would be WONDERFUL because right now we only have two. So we'll all climb up the first two and then set others up.

Pack a picnic lunch for yourself and any snacks you want :)

Caving in Saluda

Despite the tropical storm rains, we forged ahead.

The cave's just under an hour from Furman.

The hike in was exciting - slippery and muddy and a bit steep in places, but fairly short overall.  About 10-15 minutes.

Inside was fairly dry with some drips in places.  Several good, optional squeezes, a few bats, and a spotted leopard frog!
