AIPG First Meeting

March 24 Field Trip to Mine in NC

On March 24, AIPG Club attended a field trip to Cherokee Ruby and Sapphire Mine near Franklin, NC.  The trip consisted of a tour of the mine, discussion on the geology of the area and occurrence of corundum, and testing the newly excavated ore  pile with sapphire jig.  We also screened the ore in the sluice box and got to keep rubies and sapphire we found.  Our AIPG club at GSU jointly coordinated this trip with AIPG Georgia Section, University of...

AGS Professional Candidate Workshop on Glaciology and Glacial Geomorphology

Fernbank Science Center Annex (156 Heaton Park Drive, Decatur, GA)

The subject of the workshop will be Glaciology and Glacial Geomorphology.  The presenter will be Ken Bechely, P.G.  Ken has a BS and MS in Earth Science from Northern Illinois University and has been a PG in Georgia since 1993.  Ken has been a consultant for 27 years, and prior to moving to Georgia in 1986 was with the Illinois EPA for 13 years. He has first hand experience with glacial features, so this promises to be a very informative class.

I am 90% sure I will not be able to attend since my sister needs help moving as she just bought her first house. If she gets most of it done this week I may be able to come but I won't know until last minute.

Engineering Geology Class

The Engineering Geology workshop will feature Benjamin Black, P.G. leading a class on engineering geology.  The class will cover: Soil Mechanics and Soil Strength Testing (Laboratory and Field Methods), Geologic Hazards (Slope Stability, Earthquakes, etc.), Engineering Geological Mapping, Site Investigation, and time permitting, some discussion on rock mechanics.
