Description

What is the American Society of Safety Engineers? The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is the oldest Professional Society representing over 37,000 individual Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practitioners. Membership allows fellow OSH professionals to work together to advance their professional career and status as a safety professional, improve their company’s safety performance and advance the overall OSH profession. ASSE members also receive extensive information and top-notch professional development opportunities to keep them out in the forefront of the safety profession workforce. The OU-ASSE Student Section is the local chapter at Oakland University for students; we fall under the ASSE Greater Detroit Chapter. What does the OU-ASSE do? The goal of the OU-ASSE Student Section is to expose OU students, particularly those of the EHS/OSH program, to multiple perspectives of the safety field outside of the classroom. We obtain experienced speakers at our meetings, sponsor tickets to the Future Leaders Safety Conference (FLSC), coordinate internship opportunities, plan tours of actual working environments, publicize events in our newsletter, as well as provide access to ASSE scholarships, ASSE Greater Detroit Chapter Events, and discounted ASSE seminars. In order to receive the full list of our services, you must apply to become a student member. The cost of a student membership is $15, which will need to be renewed annually. You can apply online at http://www.asse.org/asse-student-membership-application/ or request a paper copy from our chapter. What are the meetings like? OU-ASSE meetings are free and open to all OU students. We conduct meetings once a month, generally for an hour and a half, during the fall and winter semesters. For these meetings, we invite experienced safety professionals to share information about their background, company, position, and experiences. Some speakers advertise safety internships or positions available within their organization. OU Alumni are especially welcomed and are asked to share anecdotes of their transition from student to safety professional. We encourage students to ask for insights and/or advice about creating a successful EHS/OSH career. Most students arrive fifteen minutes before the start of a meeting to enjoy the free food and to network with each other. Each meeting begins with the OU-ASSE officers delivering chapter information and events before introducing the speaker. Although we highly encourage you to have an active ASSE membership, you do not need one to attend our meetings. How can I get involved? Please email any of the OU-ASSE officers or EHS/OSH faculty and let us know you are interested! We will add you to our email list so you can receive our newsletter containing information about our meetings, fundraisers, conferences, and other events. You can ask to unsubscribe from our emails at any time.
