Greetings NC MAPS Members:
First and foremost, thanks to all of the 33 NC MAPS Members whom replied to our survey sent back in the summer. Your thoughts and comments have been an asset to our planning of this conference in ensuring that it is indeed worth your while. As a result,to thank you for your participation, you will receive $10 off your conference registration.
The purpose of this conference is: To provide the tools that are prerequisite to a successful pre-health career in which will enable our minority pre-health students across North Carolina to successfully matriculate into professional school, particularly medical. Our gaols include: (1) increasing the amount of MAPS chapters in the state of North Carolina, (2) increasing national (Student National Medical Association) membership and last but certainly not least (3) zealously working towards the success of AAMC's campaign of increasing diversity in medical education and ultimately the workforce.
Nonetheless, due to the increase requests to make this open to all pre-health fields, the conference was re-named as the : 1st Annual North Carolina Minority Association of Pre-health Students Conference. As a result, every workshop will have a personalized accent in the areas of: Pre-Medical, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Public Health, Pre-Physical Therapy and Pre-Nursing. For ex: Test Prep Workshop- there will be four different workshops conducted at the same time- GRE, MCAT, DAT & PCAT.
In addition, to the usual workshops: "How to be a competitive applicant", "Interviewing 101", we have added the following additional features to the conference:
Minority Men in Medicine Workshop- a forum for all Minority Men in a variety of health fields to be able to network and interact with other pre-health minority men in addition to minority men, professional students (ie. MD/PharmD candidates) and professionals. This workshop will look at the statistics of minority men matriculating into these respective professional schools and look to some possible solutions to increase the amount of minority men matriculating.
Professional Speed Mixer- 30 minutes of the conference time has been allotted for students, faculty, admission counselors, SNMA/SNPhA/ASVMA/SNDA members and health professionals to mingle. This mixer will operate as a 'speed dating' event. A bell will sound every 2 minutes for 20 minutes and then leaving an addition 10 minutes of free time for you to network with whomever you would like.
On Site Service Event- Since November is "National Caregivers Month", MAPS at NC State would love to collaborate with all of the MAPS chapters in NC in making CARE Baskets to be donated to a local Care giving facility. This could count as our service activity for Nationals!
On Site Mock Interviews- This is an opportunity for MAPS Members to participate in an on-site interview to be conducted by professional students and admission counselors. **Pre-registration required! (limited to 1st 10 students)
