2016 Alternative Break Trip Facilitator Application

Chapman University’s Alternative Break program seeks to provide students with an opportunity to work with community agencies, needs, and populations in a week-long service and immersion experience. Civic Engagement Initiatives offers several Alternative Spring Break Trip options with varying levels of direct service, learning, reflection, and immersion. The Alternative Break program is designed to connect Chapman students to shared experiences that foster personal growth, mutual awareness, and civic engagement. The Alternative Break program is committed to being drug and alcohol free.

The Role of Trip Facilitators
Attending an Alternative Break is a life-changing experience that can challenge and expand your understanding of yourself and society. To ensure a safe and successful experience for all participants, the Alternative Break program requires dedicated, caring, and active Trip Facilitators to play a critical role in the development of quality Alternative Break trips. Trip Facilitators are responsible for some of the most important tasks associated with the facilitation of Alternative Break trips. Responsibilities include:

  • Helping to prepare a group of peers for, and lead them through, an intentional immersion experience
  • Maintaining clear and continuous communication with Trip Participants and the Trip Advisor
  • Leading 4 trip preparation meetings prior to the trip
  • Assisting Trip Participants with fundraising efforts
  • Ensuring all logistical needs are met before, during, and after the trip
  • Facilitating personal and group development among participants

To prepare for and succeed in this role, Trip Facilitators must work closely with Civic Engagement Initiatives and must be available to: 1) carry out all of the expectations, responsibilities, and tasks associated with facilitating and leading an Alternative Break trip, and 2) attend the following Trip Facilitator training sessions:

Because of the breadth of this commitment, the cost of Trip Facilitators’ participation in their AB trip will be subsidized. Please consider the expectations of being a Trip Facilitator before submitting your application. Qualifications & Requirements

  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Desire to work in a leadership position
  • Be professional, detail oriented, organized, and follow through
  • Represent Chapman University and Civic Engagement Initiatives
  • Work well with others on a team
  • Desire ongoing personal and professional development
  • Desire to be challenged and to learn
  • Remain in good academic (cumulative GPA 2.5) and disciplinary standing
  • Participate in first-aid/CPR certification training (provided)
  • Complete a sexual misconduct training online
