Symphony of Southeast Texas Presents...
Appalachian Arabian Nights
Saturday, September 20, 2014
7:30 pm, Julie Rogers Theatre
Featuring Jeff Midkiff, mandolin
Hérold: Zampa Overture
Midkiff: Mandolin Concerto, “From the Blue Ridge”
The Symphony's 62nd season begins on Sept. 20 with “Appalachian Arabian Nights” featuring one of the most unique string instruments rarely heard with a symphony orchestra – the mandolin. Virtuoso mandolin player Jeff Midkiff will perform the mandolin and orchestra concerto he composed called “From the Blue Ridge.” Midkiff is a mandolinist and fiddler raised on bluegrass in Roanoke, Va. and also a professional clarinetist. The concerto brings together Midkiff’s two passions and blends the traditions in such a beautiful way.
Following the innovative presentation of the mandolin and orchestra concerto, Maestro Tipton brings it back to the traditional orchestra to perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” a great symphonic poem based on “The Arabian Nights.” Rimsky-Korsakov was known for his dazzling, colorful orchestration and utilizing the orchestra to the fullest potential. This performance will display many soloists in the orchestra and showcase the amazing talent of our musicians. *Join Maestro Tipton for a pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m. from the Julie Rogers Theatre stage. Pre-concert lectures are made possible by a gift from Dr. & Mrs. Russ Schultz.
