A Message from the New Associate Vice President and Dean of Students

Dr. Terry Mena

Welcome back to Lamar University! My name is Dr. Terry Mena, and I’m the new Associate Vice President and Dean of Students for the Division of Student Engagement. I recently joined Lamar University as your new Dean of Students. In my role, I am responsible for the overall administration and leadership of the Setzer Student Center, Student Activities, and Civic Engagement, and I serve as the Student Code of Conduct Officer and Student Ombudsman for the University.

Previously, I was the Associate Dean of Students at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida for the past eight years. I’ve worked in the field of higher education and universities for over eighteen years in a variety of roles including student conduct, student activities, student unions, and housing and residential life. To see my full bio, visit my page on LinkedIn.

I look forward to working with each of you as you begin (or continue) your leadership journey. Student organizations are a vital part of the co-curricular life here at Lamar University. You offer programs, leadership opportunities, and social opportunities, and you help many students feel more connected to Lamar. This is a special service that only our student organizations can provide. My goal is to help you and your organization to grow into the best group that you can be.

I hope that you are as excited about your development as a leader as I am. Keep an eye out for programs that we’ll be hosting as an office. Our programs are a great opportunity for your groups to connect with other students and they give you a chance to just take a break from school work.

On a final note, it is with excitement and with mixed feelings that Mrs. Valarie Daniels, Director of Student Organizations, is retiring from Lamar University after twenty-one years of service to the student body. She has held the following positions during her tenure: Academic Counselor for Student Support Services, Assistant Director of Student Organization Services, and Interim Director of Setzer Student Center. Under her tenure, she’s provided leadership and service with dedication and passion for you. Please join me in wishing Mrs. Daniels a warm farewell by visiting her office in the Setzer Student Center, Room 212A prior to August 28th.

I will serve as the interim director for the Setzer Student Center and Student Organization Services until we completed a national search for a new director.

I’d love to meet you and find out what you need from our office to help you and your organization to be successful. If you have suggestions for programs or training topics, please share them with me. My office hours in the Setzer Student Center administrative office will be Mondays, 9 am – 11 am and Wednesdays, 3 pm – 5 pm. My email address is and the Office of Student Organization Services’ phone number is 409-880-8739.
