Student Homecoming Committee Application

Applications are due by 5 pm, February 28, 2014. We will call you to schedule an interview when we receive your application. Interviews will be held March 3-5. Interviews will only take 30 minutes to complete.

The Student Homecoming Committee is structured to give students the opportunity to plan, market and implement a series of exciting annual events for the Ferris State University community.  Committee members will gain experience in management, communications, budgeting, marketing, and working as part of a team.  By submitting this form, you understand that your University record will be verified by the Homecoming advisors.  You must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and be free from current judicial sanctions to serve on the committee.  ONE APPLICATION is sufficient for all the positions listed. Chair Description and Assigned Responsibilities

Overall Chair

The Overall Chair will be responsible for coordinating the efforts of all chairs progress. This person should have strong leadership and delegation skills. The Overall Chair will be responsible for the following items

  • Running committee meetings from a planned agenda
  • Meeting and communicating with overall Homecoming Advisor
  • Acting as the delegated booker for the Homecoming Committee
  • Assisting in implementation of promotional campaign
  • Being a spokes person for the Homecoming Committee
  • Assisting all chairs with assigned tasks

King and Queen Selection Chair

The King and Queen Selection Chair will be responsible for the coordination of the 2014 Homecoming court. This person should have strong organization skills and be very detail oriented. The King and Queen Selection Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Updating entry forms and rules
  • Conducting informational meetings and interview for potential King and Queen Candidates
  • Monitoring all candidate campaigns  
  • Assist in coordinating King and Queen Q&A during Lip Sync
  • Plan candidate banquet and half time presentation

Promotions and Community Outreach Chair

The Promotions and Community Outreach Chair will be responsible for coordinating an integrated marketing plan for the entire week of Homecoming events. This chair will also be responsible for building support and involvement from the local Big Rapids Community. This person should be a clear communicator and should have some experience related to marketing and public relations.  The Promotions and Community Outreach Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Developing a promotional plan with a timeline
  • Coordinate and delegate media related inquiries
  • Coordinate Homecoming’s “Spirit Sponsor” Program (This program encourages Big Rapids businesses to decorate store fronts in support of the Homecoming theme)
  • Create and maintain a social media presence for Homecoming 2014

Bed Sheet Banner Chair

The Bed Sheet Banner Chair is responsible for the coordination of our bed sheet banner competition. This person should be detailed oriented and a clear communicator.  The Bed Sheet Banner Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attend Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Updating entry forms and rules
  • Create judging criteria and communicate clearly to participants
  • Work closely with a campus venue to display banners
  • Secure judges

Lip Sync Chair

The Lip Sync Chair will be responsible for the planning and coordination of the Lip Sync show competition.

This person should have some event planning skills and be a clear communicator. The Lip Sync Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Updating entry forms and rules
  • Create judging criteria and communicate clearly to participants
  • Secure judges and a host for the event
  • Work closely with Auditorium manager to coordinate event details
  • Assist in coordinating King and Queen Q&A during Lip Sync

Kickball Tournament Chair

The Lip Sync Chair will be responsible for the planning and coordination of the Kickball Tournament. This person should be familiar with athletic events and be a clear communicator. The Kickball Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Updating entry forms and rules
  • Reserving Top Taggart and securing referees
  • Securing equipment needed for game day
  • Creating a bracket tournament

Bonfire Chair

The Bonfire Chair will be responsible for the planning and coordination of the Bonfire event. This person should have some event planning experience and be detailed oriented. The Bonfire Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Securing a location for the event
  • Working with local fire department and campus public safety to ensure safety during event
  • Working with a local business and/or student organizations to secure wood pallets for event
  • Coordinating and booking a host, groups to perform, and games for students to participate in

Comedian Chair

The Comedian Chair will be responsible for the Homecoming Comedy Show. This person should have some event planning experience. The Comedian Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee meetings
  • Represent the Homecoming Committee at the Finance Division of Student Government for funding allocation
  • Contract national talent to perform
  • Book a venue and coordinate with venue management for event details
  • Coordinate hospitality for contracted talent

Parade Chair

The parade chair will be responsible for the coordination and planning of the Ferris Homecoming Parade in Downtown Big Rapids. This person should be very detail oriented. The Parade Chair will be responsible for the following items:

  • Attending Homecoming Committee Meetings
  • Updating entry forms and rules
  • Securing city permit
  • Working with the Big Rapids Community to orchestrate parade (Big Rapids Fire and Police Departments, Big Rapids Middle school, etc.)
  • Organizing parade line up

All committee chairs are expected to create a committee of their peers to assist in all assigned duties.
