Declaring a climate crisis emergency and supporting the School Strike for Climate

Jul 25, 2019 by Danielle Wolf

Following the monthly meeting held July 17th, the Western Sydney University Student Representative Council would like to:
1. Announce that it endorses the September 20 national School Strike 4 Climate to be held during the Global Climate Strike week, believing it to be an important initiative to help put serious action for climate change on the agenda
2. Encourage the University (broadly) and all WSU students and staff (specifically) to attend or support the demonstration in solidarity with the school student strikers and stand on the right side of history

As the Environment Collective Rep on the SRC I would like to further add, on behalf of the EC:
We applaud VC Barney Glover’s recent declaration at the C3 Congress that we are in the midst of a “Climate Emergency” and his pledge to do everything possible to ensure Western does not contribute to the problem but continues to be part of the solution.
Yet, as a nation, we just elected a Government that wants to open the floodgates to new coal, oil and gas projects that put all of us at risk, while continuing to destroy Australia’s biodiversity.
We are already hurting from the impacts of climate change (and Western Sydney especially).
If we don’t act now to justly and swiftly transition away from coal, oil & gas to 100% renewable energy for all, this will only get worse. But it’s going to take all of us working together to succeed.
Join us on September 20 – three days out from the UN’s Emergency Climate Summit -- by taking the day off school, Uni or work to show our politicians that we’re serious about climate action.
The world isn’t waiting so neither are we.
