Expedition Chandrashila 2017 FAQ
When is the trip?
It is from 07 December to 18 December 2017 (12D 11N). We will be meeting at Changi Airport on 7th December at 1930 and arrive back in Singapore at around 0800 on 18th December.
Where and what is Chandrashila?
Chandrashila literally means moon rock in Hindi. It is the summit of Tungnath, home to the highest Shiva Temple in the world, an altitude of about 4000m above sea level. Chandrashila is located near the borders of India, China and Nepal. It is 450km away from New Delhi.
What are some of the places we are visiting?
Before the trek, we will be staying in Haridwar. The trek will take place in Uttarakhand. As we trek, we will pass by Sari, Deoria Tal, Chopta and Tungnath. After the trek, during R&R, we will be visiting Rishikesh where we will embark on a safari in Rajaji National Park. On the last few days, we will be staying in New Delhi and visiting Taj Mahal in Agra City.
What is the difficulty of this trek?
This trip is rated a 4/5. The trek gradient is generally gentle but the high altitude and high probability of snowfall make it more challenging. At altitudes constantly above 3000m, any individual might be susceptible to acute mountain sickness.
How much is this trip? What does it include?
The price for non-Rovers members is $1150 SGD. Members are entitled to 5% discount to all Rovers trek, capped at a maximum of $50 per trip.
Trip fees cover visa, airfare, accommodations, trekking guides & permits, meals during the trek, transports and tours. Food before and after the trek, shopping costs and personal medication will be borne by participants themselves.
What is the brief itinerary?
Day 1 (7th December) : Flight from Singapore (SIN) to Chennai (MAA), rest in the airport for a few hours.
Day 2: Early morning flight from Chennai (MAA) to New Delhi (DEL). Travel to Haridwar. Accommodation in Haridwar.
Day 3: Depart to Sari. Acclimatize at high altitude. Accommodation in Sari
Day 4: Trek from Sari to Deoria Tal. Continue acclimatization. Hike around Deoria Tal. Accommodation in Deoria Tal campsite.
Day 5: Trek from Deoria Tal to Chopta. Accommodation in Chopta campsite.
Day 6: Trek from Chopta to Chandrashila Peak/ Return to Chopta. Accommodation in Chopta campsite.
Day 7: Depart Chopta for Rishikesh. Free & Easy for the evening.
Day 8: Jungle Safari tour in Rajaji National Park. Tour around Rishikesh. Depart for New Delhi. Accommodation in New Delhi.
Day 9: City tour around New Delhi. Continue stay in New Delhi.
Day 10: Tour to Taj Mahal and back to New Delhi.
Day 11: Free & Easy in New Delhi. Depart for New Delhi airport. Flight from New Delhi (DEL) to Chennai (MAA). Rest in Chennai airport for a few hours.
Day 12: Flight from Chennai (MAA) to Singapore (SIN). Reach Changi Airport in the morning.
How’s the weather like?
Expect temperatures from 10 to 15 degree Celsius in the day to 0 to -10 degree Celsius in the night. Good quality sleeping bags will be provided by the trek agency. You might even experience snow at the mountain peak! So it is important to have warm clothing.
Where will we spend the nights?
For the 5 days of the trek, we will be sleeping in sturdy tents on their campsites along the trek routes. For other days in Haridwar, Rishikesh and New Delhi, we will be staying in hostels.
Will there be a local guide?
Yes, there will be English speaking trek guides from the trek agency.
How many participants will be on this trek?
We are only accepting a total of 10 participants in this trek. Slots are limited, so sign up fast!
How is this trek different from the others?
On top of experiencing snow, we will also view enchanting forests of great variety on the mountains - to name a few, maple, oaks, pine and rhododendrons. Experience the culture of mountain villages during the trek. This trek bears a higher altitude (~4000m) compared to other treks. It might seem daunting, but the panoramic view of the mighty Himalayas and new forged friendship makes the climb all the more worthwhile!
