Georgia Education Mentorship (GEM) Application

Program Description | In the Georgia Education Mentorship (GEM) Program, Georgia College students are matched with leaders in fields such as business, education, politics, healthcare, law, and industry - many of whom are members of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. These executives serve as mentors for participating students, supporting their personal and professional growth by providing opportunities for them to learn about the principles and practices of effective leadership that benefit the professional world and the community.

Throughout the year, participating students also take part in leadership and professional development opportunities offered by the GEM program. These events and activities allow students to:

  • build relationships with their fellow participants
  • gain a better understanding of leadership concepts
  • discuss the lessons learned from their mentorship
  • develop skills that will help them meet current and future leadership challenges.

The GEM program is a year-long experience and requires a commitment to participate during both the fall and spring semesters of an academic year. Students earn one hour of academic credit each semester by being enrolled in LEAD 2100: Georgia Education Mentorship.

Participants who successfully complete the program will attend a special closing ceremony in their honor and receive an award to recognize participation and a cord to be worn at graduation.

Established in 2002, and initially funded by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation (www.woodruff.org), GEM is a creative partnership between Georgia College and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce (www.gachamber.com). Since the program’s inception, over 300 students have participated.

Early Application Deadline for GEM 2015-16: February 27, 2015
Final Application Deadline for GEM 2015-16: March 27, 2015

The GEM program is a year-long experience and requires a commitment to participate during both the fall and spring semesters of an academic year.  Students from all disciplines are invited to apply, and they may do so at any time during the academic year prior to the application deadline.

Program Requirements | Applicants must:

  • be of sophomore, junior or senior standing by the anticipated start of their program experience
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • be able to take LEAD 2100: Georgia Education Mentorship during both the fall and spring semester of their participation
  • be willing and able to participate in leadership and professional development events and activities throughout the year
  • be willing and able to travel to meet with their mentor throughout the year
  • be committed to maintaining good Academic Standing and abiding by the GC Honor Code
  • complete an interview with the GEM Advisory Board

Students will be notified of their application status by May 1.
