MAPS (Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students) is a nationally recognized organization under the larger organization SNMA (Student National Medical Association) open to all undergraduate classifications of Pre-medical related track minorities. Pre-Medical related tracks include but not limited to: Pre-Medical, Pre-Pharmacy, Nursing, PT/OT, Exercise Science, Optometry, Neurology, etc. The scripted goals from section 2 of our constitution:

  • A)   To provide underrepresented pre-med students with knowledge, skills, and experience that are both prerequisite and concomitant to professional participation in health care fields
  • B)   To improve minority student matriculation into all professional health related programs, with an emphasis on medicine
  • C)   To encourage culturally conscious physicians by increasing awareness of issues that underrepresented communities face

My personal goals for the organization include making this organization a means of networking between pre-medical related minorities on campus. I plan to inform them of the many opportunities such as shadowing, research, scholarships, and internships available for minorities in their particular tracks. I feel an organization like such is very very necessary on our campus seeing that there is none of its kind here presently. I want to connect students to upperclassmen who have already been through these struggles of the hard classes and have overcome, advertise for minority tutors in these courses, and link students to professionals in their field. I have such high hopes for this organization, but I know it’s going to take hard work and help from others who want to see minorities succeed.
