Frequently asked questions

Can I use my paid work as evidence for this award?

No. The award is only for voluntary, unpaid positions.

What if some of my voluntary experiences are of a gold standard, but others are silver or bronze? What will my overall award be?

Respond to each competency with your best example(s) of demonstrating each skill and then consider your overall development through the award period. We will look at the application as a whole and decide which level to award. Your award isn't 'dragged' down by 'lower' volunteering.

Can I take longer than 12 months to complete it?

You have 12 months, which begins from the moment you register on this site for the award. If, once you’ve started, you think you are going to have difficulties meeting this deadline, email volunteer@auckland.ac.nz and we will be able to advise you.

Can I take less than 12 months?

That is fine. 12 months is the maximum amount of time available.

Can I get my previous volunteering experience recognised?

Only volunteer work completed from the start date of your Leadership and Service Award can be used as evidence in your application. Any volunteering completed before you start the Leadership and Service Award will not be considered.

What if I do more hours than the hours required?

It’s not about quantity! It’s about the quality of the experience. We are looking for you to demonstrate the skills you have developed through your voluntary work, above the amount of time you spent in a particular activity. 'Organising and planning' is a key competency so we want to see that you are able to balance your volunteering with your study commitments.

Can I get more than one award?

It is possible to receive multiple awards. For example, you could earn a bronze and silver, or two bronzes. You do not need to earn them in order.

How do I submit an application for an award?

First, you need to tell us when you are beginning. Do this by applying to start. This will start the clock ticking. Then, when you have gathered enough evidence, submit your application. We will review your application and let you know the level you have been awarded.

What do I need to submit to apply for an award?

To apply for the Leadership and Service Award, you must submit:

  • A response to each of the five comptencies
  • Job or position descriptions if you have them available for each volunteering activity
  • One reflective summary

Why do I have to complete a reflective summary? What’s the difference between that and the response to the competencies?

The competencies sheet demonstrate what you did and the skills you used in a particular setting.

You complete only one reflective summary, and this is designed to capture what you have learned as a result. A reflective tool is useful in improving self-awareness, identifying strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities for further development. It can also help in better preparing you for employment, by practising the articulation of how the learning is relevant to what employers are looking for.

What happens when the award is decided on? Will I be contacted?

The panel reviews applications four times a year. Once the panel has reached a decision you will be advised by email. The award is then added to your transcript, and is available to view at the end of the semester.
