At the National Lawyers Guild, we’re leftists: we believe that human rights are more sacred than property interests. Our programming has addressed the following themes, among others: the criminal legal system, state surveillance, radical analyses of LGBTQ issues, and labor and organizing.

We have a nonhierarchical leadership group - the Coordinators - that anyone can join by sending a request to join our listserv and attending a meeting. Anyone can turn up, pitch an idea, and help plan something, including speaker events, student-led discussions, and internal debates and social events.

We have a separate list for non-Coordinator members, who we keep updated through a weekly digest and are invited to member events, including social events and internal programming (debates, discussions, etc.)

Our main activities include:

  • Coordinating Legal Observers to support local activists and organizers. Legal Observers work under the supervision of attorneys to monitor police activities, create a record that can be used to support activists, and disincentivize police officers from abusing constitutional rights.
  • Holding space for leftist discussions; last year this included topics like “When is it OK to call the police?” and “Is Nazi-punching justified?”
  • Inviting speakers and holding workshops and teach-ins, including the NLG Mass Incarceration Week.
  • Organizing cross-group social events, including the orientation Progressive Picnic and the Valentine’s Day Leftist Love-in.
