Avalanche Safety with the Mount Washington Avalanche Center

Alander Mountain Overnight!

Join us for a Yale Outdoors tradition: plunging into the Long Island Sound at Light House Point Beach! Expected low is 18°C. We will meet at Phelps Gate at 6:00am and drive to the park to catch the 6:54am sunrise. Afterwards we'll get a delicious breakfast at the Pantry (cinnamon roll pancakes!!) and make it back to campus by 8:30am. Bring a dry change of clothes, a towel, a small dose of insanity, and $8-10 in cash for breakfast.

West Rock Bike Ride

Join us for a morning cycle along the top of West Rock Ridge on Saturday. The forest track that runs along the top of the Ridge is beautiful in the Fall - passing a number of Hamden's natural treasures like Lake Wintergreen. The plan is to leave at 10 a.m from the Women's Table and we should be back on campus before noon. The pace will be leisurely and we will likely stop for a hot chocolate along the way.

Join us for a hike of beautiful West Rock! We'll be joined by Berkeley HoC/geology extraordinaire Dave Evans, who will guide us on a tour of West Rock's geology, including the famous Judge's Cave. Cars will leave at 10am from Beinecke Plaza, and will be back before 1pm. Dress warmly!

Family Weekend East Rock Birdwatching Hike

Students and parents are all invited to come take a walk and see some fall bird migration and spectacular foliage in East Rock Park! Bring binoculars if you have them (if not, email matthew.hack@yale.edu to borrow a pair!) and wear warm layers. We will meet up on cross campus and take the Yale shuttle to and from the park. No hiking experience necessary!

How to operate canister, liquid fuel, and integrated stoves, with a focus on MSR Pocket Rocket and WhisperLite.  Fuel selection and management, cooking in cold weather and at altitude.  Snow melting and water purification.  Brief overview of stove maintenance and repair with an emphasis on the importance of self-teaching and practice.  Discussion of the outside influence the stove and your knowledge of its use and repair has on your safety.  This Skills Session does not cover meal planning...
