Dr. Richard Brent Turner’s lecture will situate Islam as an important conduit through which to understand the dynamic interactions between empires, cultures, and racial identities in the Gulf South. Turner’s talk will explore the history and socio-political experiences of the urban and literate West African Muslims who were brought to New Orleans during the era that spanned trans-Atlantic slavery and their impact on black internationalism and the rich musical culture of the city.

A reception with light refreshments will follow the lecture.
