POSITION: Travel Counselor (Part-time/Seasonal)
DEPARTMENT: Ben Rogers Visitors and Information Center
WAGE: $10.5873 per hour

Position Summary: Provide statewide travel information to the general public. Promote travel to and within the State. Work is performed at the Ben Rogers Visitors and Information Center. Work requires extensive contact with the public. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work with Ben Rogers Visitors and Information Center Director and staff
  • Greet walk-in customers and provide travel and routing information
  • Prepare routes for travelers
  • Answer visitor questions and information requests
  • Answer road condition telephone calls, which may include complaints
  • Keep daily records of number of people served
  • Perform administrative support including filing, sorting, processing of mail, typing, writing correspondence, and faxing
  • May assist with proof reading
  • Perform literature inventory; stock literature racks; reorder literature and maps from TxDoT, tourist attractions, and chambers of commerce
  • Fulfill mail requests on a constant basis
  • Assist in compiling statistical data, preparing expense accounts and billing statements, providing special reports, and conducting research
  • Open and close the Visitors and Information Center in the absence of the supervisor
  • May speak to groups about Texas tourism and Jefferson County Visitors Center services
  • Promote area tourism through working at travel shows locally and throughout Texas
  • Assist with distribution of specialty items; assemble gifts
  • Clean work station and public areas
  • Make coffee and popcorn; restock as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), plus four (4) years of experience in a position requiring direct contact with the public. Related college education or technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-per-year basis.

  • Statistical compilation practices and techniques
  • Travel and information services
  • Texas geography, history and cultures
  • Texas attractions, travel, and tourism
  • Inventory and stock control procedures
  • Writing, editing, reporting, and writing techniques
  • Record-keeping, inventory, and records management
  • Command of the English language including effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Provide prompt and courteous customer service
  • Read and interpret maps
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Advise customers when delays are necessary
  • Follow up on identified problems until resolved
  • Courteously and effectively deal with the public
  • Schedule work assignments; lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others
  • Proper business telephone etiquette
  • Internal communication strategies
  • Use of basic office equipment
  • Develop and give presentations
  • Proficiency with personal computer applications and systems including Excel, Word, and Outlook

Preferred Abilities:

  • Skill in graphic design, PowerPoint, and media experience is desirable
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred but not required

Work Situations, Demands, and Effort:

  • Facility is open seven (7) days a week, 10 hours a day
  • This position will often work weekends and a nontraditional work schedule, including some overnight travel
  • May assist with managing the department and supervising work of others
  • This position has broad range of independent judgment in interpreting and applying policies and administrative guidelines
  • This position must be available to answer questions and make decisions during operational hours

Working Conditions:

  • Work is normally performed in a climate controlled environment
  • Some activities may be conducted outdoors

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting and standing
  • Driving to other locations
  • Reaching and lifting
