NUS Global Citizen Conference
Out of the turn of the century has emerged unfamiliar geopolitical challenges and shifting social structures and perspectives worldwide. This new global age has also seen the birth of a generation of digital natives and continues to bear witness to their growth in a time of ground-breaking advancements in technology, all happening at a breakneck speed. Life as we know it has changed irrevocably, but age-old issues have also stubbornly remained in addition to the new set of issues arising from the different geo-political and social landscape of today’s world. Traditional models of thinking and solutions are no longer sufficient to respond to new challenges. Considering these changes, what is the role of today’s youths as global citizens?
Against the backdrop of issues such as increasing nationalism and protectionist measures, xenophobia and Islamophobia, the NUSSU Global Relations Unit (GRU) would like to organize the second iteration of the Global Citizen Conference. This was first inaugurated in 2017 with the theme “Social Inclusion”. The theme for the Global Citizen Conference 2018 will be “Global Progression”, suggesting both a continuity with and progression from the previous conference while simultaneously querying the definitions and evaluations of “progress” particularly on a global scale.
In accordance with GRU’s vision and mission, the conference is intended to broaden youths’ critical perspectives on global issues today and empower them to be active global citizens who can and will make a positive difference in their countries and the world. We believe in a free exchange of information and ideas, sharing best practices and experiences, and building a safe space for personal growth and learning. It is also our hope that the conference will go a long way in empowering youths to promote effective and sustainable progression for their communities and the world.
