Second Annual Mryna Loy Corley Critical Thinking and Writing Excellence Award

The Second Annual Mryna Loy Corley Critical Thinking and Writing Award was established by the East Cleveland City Schools and Case Western Reserve University to recognize the critical thinking and writing ability of outstanding Provost Scholars. The Award will be given to Scholars who successfully submit a final essay and meet all of the essay competition's requirements.

To be eligible for an award, a Provost Scholar must meet the following essay requirements: 

1) Submit an essay using this online form or give a hard copy to a Provost Scholars staff person no later than Tuesday, March 20, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

2) Answer one of the following essay questions based on Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" or Barack Obama's "Dreams of My Father":

a. Eighth and ninth grade students will use Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye to respond to one of the following questions:  

  • The Bluest Eye uses multiple narrators, including Claudia as a child, Claudia as an adult and a third-person narrator. Which narrator do you think is most central to the novel and why?
  • Who do you think is the most sympathetic character in The Bluest Eye? List three examples about why you have identified this character as the most sympathetic person to relate to in the story.
  • Which is the greatest threat to children in the The Bluest Eye: racism or sexism? Please provide 2-3 specific examples from the book to support your answer.

b. Tenth through twelfth graders will use Barack Obama's Dreams of My Father to answer one of the three following questions:

  • How did President Obama’s personal story help to shape his trajectory towards the presidency? Please provide 2-3 examples in your answer.
  • What are some of the social challenges Obama faced from early childhood to his adulthood? Please provide at least 2-3 examples and explain how each presented a challenge for him.
  • What is the most memorable event in Dreams from My Father and why?

In addition to answering one of the above questions, Scholars must also submit a cover page with their full name, date they are submitting the essay, grade level, name of their school, and title of the book they read. All essays must be at least 800-1,000 words in length and typed in size 12 Times New Roman font. Any submissions will be evaluated by a faculty or staff person at East Cleveland City Schools or Case Western Reserve University.
