Policy Update: FFA Junior Chapters

Sep 19, 2017 by Ronnie Simmons

The Florida FFA Board of Directors recently revised policy related to Junior FFA Chapters.  While "junior" chapters are not common throughout the country, a few remain a part of our structure here in Florida, most likely a remnant of the previous public school structure that included "junior high schools".  Some years ago, policy was put into place regarding the existence of junior chapters and qualifications for establishing new junior chapters.  Our board recently updated these policies and they are in effect this membership year, beginning July 1, 2017.

Policy for existing Junior Chapters (chartered prior to June 30, 2017)

  • As per recent board action, staff will continue to monitor all Junior Chapters chartered before July 1, 2017 to ensure compliance with current policy.
  • These chapters will be given one school year (until May 1, 2018) to meet compliance standards.
  • If at any time (beyond May 1, 2018) a junior chapter is determined to be out of compliance and/or if a chapter is deactivated for any reason, a future reactivation will only be allowed under the new policy pertaining to chapters chartered/reactivated on or after July 1, 2017 (see below).
  • Compliance standards for these “grandfathered” chapters include:
    • At least 60 FFA members in senior chapter (grades 10-12)
    • At least 10 FFA members in junior chapter (grade 9)
    • Two (or more) agriculture teachers in program
    • Junior chapter member names must be on the junior roster
    • Junior chapter members may only participate on junior chapter teams and cannot be “moved up” to the senior chapter until they reach 10th grade

Policy for new/re-activated Junior Chapters (chartered on or after July 1, 2017)

  • A Junior Chapter (9th grade chapter) may be chartered or reactivated (on or after July 1, 2017) if the following conditions are met:
    • At least 100 FFA members in the senior chapter (grades 10-12)
    • At least 25 FFA members in the junior chapter (grade 9)
    • Two (or more) agriculture teachers in program
    • Junior chapter member names must appear on the junior chapter roster
    • Junior chapter members may only participate on junior chapter teams and cannot be “moved up” to the senior chapter until they reach 10th grade
