UAB International Mentors is a student-leadership program that provides incoming international students with valuable information about UAB, Birmingham, and the United States. Mentors serve the UAB international community by offering programming, support, and assistance to better meet the needs of incoming new students.

The mentors are chosen through a highly selective process each spring and go through extensive training to offer the best services possible. The program is housed within the Office of Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs, which is in the division of Student Affairs. ​​

Want to join the IM fam? Now's your chance! Applications for the 2018-2019 school year are now available. New applicants must attend a mandatory information session in order for their application to be approved.

How we help international students:

  • Provide you with knowledge about UAB and Birmingham
  • Provide you with information on everything from how to find an apartment, to what the professors are like at UAB
  • Welcome you to UAB during International Orientations, assist with initial check-in, and host the International Welcome Party
  • Keep you updated about events happening in and around the Birmingham area
  • Plan a monthly outing for you and other international students
  • Be a resource for any questions about UAB

UAB International Mentors is a student-leadership program that provides incoming international students with valuable information about UAB, Birmingham, and the United States. Mentors serve the UAB international community by offering programming, support, and assistance to better meet the needs of incoming new students.

The mentors are chosen through a highly selective process each spring and go through extensive training to offer the best services possible. To better meet the needs of international students, International Mentors follow a thorough training that involves leadership and cross-cultural communication skills. They must be able to introduce and guide new students through departmental, campus, and community resources.

The program is housed within the Office of Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs, which is in the division of Student Affairs. ​​

Selection Process

If your organization has selective membership, please describe the selection process.

Applications for the International Mentors Program are made available during the Spring semester. The application consists of basic background information, short essay questions, and recommendation letters. Based on application scores and evaluations, select students will move on to the interview process for final selection.
