Semester Serves volunteers will tutor middle & high school youth on a variety of subjects through an after school program at Veale Athletic Center hosted by Urban Squash, which teaches the sport of squash and provides academic support and life skills development to Cleveland area youth. Volunteers will likely just be tutoring and not playing squash, although there may be a few opportunities to participate in warm-up drills with the youth. Volunteers will also engage in a few lesson planning activities throughout the semester and will present as a group two 30-45 minute academic or life skills focused lesson plans during the program. The program takes place every Tuesday from 4 to 6:45 p.m. beginning Tuesday, September 26. This site requires a commitment of one semester. There will be a mandatory training on best practices for working with youth on Friday, September 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Clark Hall room 309, pizza provided. Volunteers are also required to be available to stay until 7:15 p.m. on the first day of the program (9/26) for a training with Urban Squash staff. The specific dates of this CCEL Serves will be as follows: 9/22 (training), 9/26 (stay until 7:15pm), 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21, 11/28, and 12/5.
