All Day
Emerson Elementary in LakewoodMap Location

Semester Serves volunteers will tutor middle and high school youth who are refugees at Asian Services In Action, Inc.'s after school program at Emerson Elementary in the City of Lakewood. Tutoring will include both English-language practice as well as academic assistance, and volunteers do not need to be native English speakers. There will also be the opportunity to engage in a weekly English language lesson with the youth as well as a potential chance to present your own lesson if interested. The program takes place every Thursday from 4:45 to 8:15 p.m. beginning Thursday, September 28. On the first day of the site (9/28), volunteers should be available to leave campus at 4:15 p.m. to arrive at the site early for training. There will also be a mandatory training on best practices for working with youth on Friday, September 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Clark Hall room 309, pizza provided. Volunteers must also complete an application and background check prior to beginning tutoring. For students participating in CCEL's Civic Engagement Scholars program, time spent completing these requirements can count towards Scholars hours. Transportation is provided in the CCEL van by the Semester Serves student leader. The specific dates of the program will be as follows: 9/22 (training), 9/28 (depart campus at 4:15 p.m.), 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, and 12/7.

To sign up: Click the green button above, and fill out the short, one page application form that pops up.  You will then be contacted by CCEL to confirm your participation.  If this program is full, please contact Adrian Griffin at aag72@case.edu to be added to the waitlist.

Accessibility: CCEL is committed to providing all students with opportunities to take full advantage of our programs. Our staff recognizes that students with documented disabilities may require reasonable accommodations in order to achieve this objective. If you are interested in taking part in a specific project but have questions related to accommodations and/or the accessibility of a site, please contact the office of Disability Resources in Educational Services for Students and they will work with a representative from our office to answer your questions.
