Opening Reception: Giving Voices to Ghosts @ 4-6pm -- Evans Center Art Gallery

Giving Voices to Ghosts art exhibit coming to Marian University
Indianapolis – Giving Voices to Ghosts, featuring artwork created by orphaned children in Post-World War I Germany, will be on display in the Marian University Art Gallery in the Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences from August 29-October 7, 2016. An opening reception of the exhibit will be held Thursday, September 1 from 4-6 p.m. The exhibit and the reception, which are funded by the Talbot Street Art Fair, are free and open to the public.
The work featured in this exhibit was created by children in an orphanage in Köpenick, Germany as part of an exchange with the Quaker organization the American Friends Service Committee for their help providing food. Most of the images in the exhibition depict scenes of the Quäkerspeisung or Quaker feeding. This food program in Germany would feed one million children per day at its height. The program was started in 1919 with the help of Herbert Hoover and the American Relief Administration. Dr. Robert Yarnell, a chairman of this program, said the purpose of this work was, “an attempt to put into practice the belief of the Society of Friends that lasting good can never be accomplished by war or violence, but only by love and service.” Other images depict food and supplies being transported and distributed on ships, trains and carts. The AFSC continued this life-saving work into and after WWII and was a co-recipient of the Noble Peace Prize in 1947. Today they continue to advocate and work for peace, justice, equality and civil rights for people around the world.
The Marian University Art Gallery (Evans Center) is located on the north end of the second floor of the Michael Evans Center for Health Sciences on the Marian University campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, although appointments at later times are welcome.  Please contact Gallery Director Crystal Vicars-Pugh at for additional information.
